What is the typical ratio of silver to copper in silver-copper electrical contacts?

Basic characteristics of silver-copper electrical contact materials
Silver (Ag) has the best electrical conductivity (about 105% IACS) and good thermal conductivity, which can effectively reduce contact resistance, reduce heat generation, and improve electrical efficiency; while copper (Cu) has a slightly lower electrical conductivity (about 97% IACS), but its hardness, mechanical strength and anti-welding adhesion performance are better than pure silver, and the price is more cost-effective. Through silver-copper alloying or composite technology, the advantages of the two metals can be comprehensively utilized to improve the comprehensive performance of the material.
Typical ratio of silver to copper and its performance impact
In actual industrial production, the silver content of silver-copper electrical contacts is usually divided into the following typical ranges:
Ag90Cu10 (90% silver + 10% copper): This is one of the most common ratios, with extremely low contact resistance, excellent electrical conductivity and arc resistance. Mainly used in high-end relays, power switches and other occasions requiring high electrical performance.
Ag80Cu20: This ratio improves the hardness and wear resistance of the material while maintaining good electrical conductivity, and is suitable for low-voltage circuit breakers or contactors with medium loads.
Ag70Cu30 and below silver content: Suitable for applications with slightly lower requirements for electrical conductivity but more emphasis on cost control, such as home appliance switches, car horn contacts, etc.
It should be emphasized that the higher the silver content, the better the conductivity, but at the same time the material price also rises sharply; while the increase in copper content improves mechanical strength and wear resistance, but may cause increased contact resistance and increased arc erosion. Therefore, material design in different industries and under different working conditions needs to find the optimal balance between performance and cost.
Nantong Rongxin's technical advantages and application practice of silver-copper materials
Nantong Rongxin Electrical Control Technology Co., Ltd. is a technology-based enterprise with a 40-year development history. Its predecessor was "Rugao Shuguang Tungsten-Molybdenum Materials Co., Ltd." established in 1984. Relying on many years of material smelting and processing experience, it has accumulated rich research and development and manufacturing capabilities for electrical contact materials.
Since the reorganization, the company has fully utilized the advantages of its original technical strength and skilled employees. While inheriting the tungsten-molybdenum metal technology, it has expanded to the research and development and manufacturing of silver-copper electrical contacts. The products cover multiple fields such as electrical switch contacts, automotive electrical contacts, and automotive horn contacts, and the control of the silver-copper ratio has reached the industry-leading level.
In the development process of AgCu contacts, Nantong Rongxin uses a variety of advanced processes such as powder metallurgy, sintering coating, cold pressing sintering composite, etc. to accurately control the silver-copper ratio according to different customer needs, and uses high-precision equipment such as metallographic microanalysis, spectral analysis, tensile strength testing, and ultrasonic flaw detection to fully ensure the consistency and reliability of the materials. Its Ag90Cu10 series products are widely used in high-end industrial control systems; Ag80Cu20 products occupy a solid share in the domestic and foreign automotive electrical accessories market.

What are the commonly used manufacturing processes for silver-copper electrical contacts?

Powder Metallurgy
Powder metallurgy is one of the most widely used methods for manufacturing silver-copper composite contact materials, especially for Ag-Cu alloys or silver-metal oxide contact materials (such as Ag-CuO, Ag-W, AgSnO₂).
The process includes:
Raw material ratio: mixing silver powder with copper powder (or copper oxide powder) in a predetermined ratio;
Pressure forming: cold pressing in a mold;
High temperature sintering: sintering in an inert atmosphere to allow metallurgical bonding between powder particles;
Subsequent processing: such as shaping, slicing, punching or surface treatment.
Technical features:
Uniform component distribution can be achieved, suitable for mass production;
Dense structure and good mechanical strength;
The silver-copper ratio can be flexibly adjusted according to usage requirements.
Nantong Rongxin has mature experience in powder metallurgy technology. With advanced sintering furnaces and supporting testing equipment (such as metallographic analyzers and spectrometers), it ensures the consistency of each batch of contact materials in microstructure and performance parameters. This process is widely used in its high-performance electrical switch contacts and automotive electrical connector products.
Explosion Welding / Bonding
Explosion welding is a composite method that uses high-speed shock waves to strongly bond two metals together. It is often used to manufacture bimetallic contacts with a silver layer and a copper substrate.
Process flow:
Place the silver plate and the copper plate at a certain angle;
Trigger an explosion and release a high-energy shock wave instantly;
Silver and copper undergo plastic deformation in a very short time to achieve metallurgical bonding.
Technical advantages:
High bonding strength at the bonding interface;
No heating is required to avoid silver oxidation;
Suitable for manufacturing composite sheets with uniform thickness and excellent conductivity.
Nantong Rongxin uses the explosion welding process in some customized products, which is particularly suitable for industrial control components with high requirements for both conductivity and strength, such as the main contacts of high-current switches.
Sintering cladding method (Cladding with Sintering)
This process is to coat silver powder on the surface of the copper substrate through high pressure, and then sinter and solidify it at high temperature. It is a cost-effective silver-copper composite method.
Process advantages:
High material utilization rate, controllable silver material;
Firm bonding between surface silver and base copper;
Suitable for manufacturing composite contacts with silver thickness of 0.1~0.5mm.
Nantong Rongxin's products produced by sintering coating method are widely used in automobile horn contacts and low-voltage electrical switches. Its Ag80Cu20/Ag70Cu30 composite materials have a good balance between conductivity and economy, and are popular with domestic and foreign customers.
Brazing & Diffusion Bonding
Suitable for the combination of silver contacts and copper bases, such as composite contacts (insert-type contacts). Silver-based brazing materials can be selected or diffusion welding process can be directly used to ensure the structural integrity and electrical performance of the contacts.
Nantong Rongxin pays special attention to the precise detection of welding strength and resistance value in process control, and is equipped with tensile testing machines and ultrasonic flaw detectors to ensure that each welding product meets industry standards.
Precision cold heading/stamping forming process
Used to manufacture large quantities of silver-copper contact parts, such as pins, springs and other structural parts. This process combines silver-copper composite strips and high-speed stamping equipment to achieve high-efficiency, low-tolerance, and high-consistency product molding.
Nantong Rongxin has multiple high-precision stamping equipment, combined with an automated detection system, which improves processing efficiency and product consistency, ensuring the reliability of silver-copper contacts in terms of structural strength and surface quality.

What are the common defects in the machining process of silver-copper contacts?

Burrs
Burrs are one of the most common defects in machining, especially when turning, stamping or milling silver-copper materials. Because silver is soft and copper is tough, the material is easily torn at the shear edge to form tiny flash.
Impact:
Affects the surface flatness and dimensional accuracy of the contact;
It is easy to cause concentrated arc discharge, affecting the conduction stability;
There is a risk of piercing insulation or stuck installation.
Nantong Rongxin Countermeasures:
Nantong Rongxin effectively reduces burr generation by optimizing mold geometry, using high-precision cold heading and blanking molds, and setting up automatic deburring and gas cooling cleaning systems in key processes. In addition, the company introduces high-resolution microscopic visual inspection equipment in the quality inspection process to ensure that the parts shipped are free of sharp burrs.
Cracks and Microcracks
Silver-copper materials may crack under mechanical impact or thermal stress concentration, which is common in the stamping forming area, welding heat-affected zone or near the composite interface.
Causes:
The local strain of the material is too large or the residual stress is not released;
The porosity of powder metallurgy materials is high, which is easy to cause stress concentration;
The process parameters (such as cold working ratio, annealing temperature) do not match.
Nantong Rongxin Experience:
Nantong Rongxin adopts a full-process temperature-controlled annealing system, and greatly improves the toughness and plasticity of the material through the early vacuum sintering density control and subsequent isothermal heat treatment of the material. In addition, the company introduces ultrasonic flaw detection and X-ray non-destructive testing technology to detect microcracks at an early stage and screen and correct them in time.
Deformation & Dimensional Inaccuracy
Silver-copper contact parts are mostly small high-precision structural parts. If the fixture design is unreasonable or the cutting force control is improper during processing, it is very easy to cause local deformation or out-of-tolerance.
Common manifestations:
End face warping, crank bending;
Length, height, thickness dimensions are out of tolerance;
Poor contact or jamming during reassembly.
Nantong Rongxin measures:
The company widely uses automated fixture positioning system and constant force CNC tool control technology in precision processing, and combines the online three-coordinate dimension measurement system to provide real-time feedback and correction deviation to eliminate deformation defects from the source. In addition, the company trains operators to master the plasticity differences of materials with different silver-copper ratios to achieve differentiated process adjustments.
Layer Peeling
During the process of explosive compounding, hot pressing diffusion welding or cladding sintering, if the interface is not firmly bonded, the silver layer is prone to peeling, blistering or shedding during mechanical processing.
Technical risks:
Contact resistance increases and reliability decreases;
Local arc concentration makes it easy to ablate and penetrate;
Increase the rework rate and cost in the later stage.
Nantong Rongxin's approach:
Nantong Rongxin uses fine surface treatment and cleaning before compounding to ensure the cleanliness of the interface; after compounding, long-term low-temperature tempering is implemented to make the interface structure more stable. At the same time, with the help of metallographic analyzer and bonding strength test system, batch sampling and analysis of compound quality are carried out to fundamentally eliminate the peeling of the composite layer.
Surface Roughness & Scratches
The surface state of silver-copper materials directly affects the contact resistance and wear life. If fine grinding is not performed after processing or improper friction is performed during transportation, surface scratches or excessive roughness are easily formed.
Nantong Rongxin quality control:
Nantong Rongxin uniformly performs surface polishing and anti-oxidation protection treatment before the product leaves the factory. Anti-scratch film and separation devices are also used in the packaging and logistics stages to prevent the finished products from contacting and scratching each other. Combined with the company's metallographic and microscopic analysis systems, the surface roughness of each batch of products is maintained within the micron level, comprehensively improving contact efficiency and aesthetics.
